Leading up to the Declarations of Resistance North Island Tour is the anticipated 7th album release from Upper Hutt Posse!!
2011 is a pivotal year for Upper Hutt Posse. Now a seven-piece live band, with leader Te Kupu transformed as rhythm guitarist-vocalist, with MC Wiya on bass and vocals, and Blue Dread on percussion and vocals.
They are joined by newcomers Des Mallon on drums, John Henare (keyboards), Jeff Henderson (alto saxophone) and Jeremy Coubrough (tenor saxophone).
October 22nd will see the release of Upper Hutt Posse’s seventh album Declaration of Resistance, a 13-song musical manifesto of socio-political consciousness which has been three years in the making. Music videos and a national tour will coincide with the album’s release.
In the spirit of protest against tyranny, the music is a distinctive rap-reggae-funk-soul fusion, highlighting their flair and musical sophistication. UHP continue their kaupapa (objective / purpose) of consciousness-raising, unrelenting in their momentum to address global imperial capitalist culture.
Formed as a four-piece reggae group in 1985, the Posse emerged at the forefront of the local response to emerging Hiphop culture, and are the progenitors of South Pacific Hiphop.
In 1988 they released this country’s first rap song 'E Tu' (Stand Up!), followed a year later with Aotearoa’s first rap album, Against The Flow, touring with impassioned performances that brought both notoriety and respect.
2011 is a pivotal year for UHP as they reposition themselves through the new album and new lineup.
Recent live performances have been well received and the band is looking forward to sharing their new sound with listeners throughout the country later this year.
