Our MC this week - Urzila Carlson - 2011 nominee for a Billy T; soloist at NZ Comedy Festivals and Adelaide Fringe in 2010; winner of the 2010 NZ Comedy Guild’s Best Female Comedian Award.
Our acts:
Alan Hurley - Irishman Alan Hurley started his comedy career while at college in Cork, by winning a RAG Week comedy competition. Since then he has played at venues all over his native land, gigging with the great and good of Irish stand-up. Now however, in his country's long tradition of emigration, he's fled the Emerald Isle and brought his long, lanky frame and curly head full of nonsense to Kiwi shores.
Alan McElroy - Winner of 'Best Newcomer' -2010 NZ Comedy Guild Awards. After temporarily paralysing his mother during child birth with his unusually large cranium, Dubliner Alan McElroy dragged his heavy noggin around, accumulating scratches and scrapes from the ground and the carpet burn from the never-ending sand paper-like floor covering that devoured Ireland in the 1980s.
As the Old Country moved into the 90s, so did the floor-covering material. Heavily influenced by home decorating television shows, the wooden floors had Alan looking like a shunned, unkempt hedgehog because of the countless splinters stuck in his head. It took 28 years before he grew into his own mullet and was finally able to leave Ireland and fly to New Zealand, without being forced to pay a large extra baggage fee. Now he regularly performs on the Auckland scene to laughter, laughter!
Danny McChrystal - Originally from Liverpool, Danny finally overcame a lifetime of stage fright (induced by being told off as a child at a drama class for taking two biscuits instead of one at break-time) to perform stand-up comedy for the first time at the Classic Comedy Club at the end of 2007. After a handful of open-mic slots, he made it to the final of the RAW Comedy Quest at the NZ International Comedy Festival in May 2008. He was also nominated as 'best newcomer' by his peers at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards at the end of 2008.
He debuted a sold-out show called 'Full English' in 2009, and Full English 2 made a triumphant return to the 2010 NZ International Comedy Festival. In 2011, Danny debuted his first solo show at the NZ International Comedy Festival, "A Theory Of Everything".
Reuben Lee - Hailing from the holiday hotspot of Barnsley in the UK, Auckland based comedian Reuben Lee waited 36 years before stepping up to the mic. Since then he has kept himself very busy. Firstly drawing attention as one half of the sell-out 2009 NZ International Comedy Festival shows Full English. The imaginatively titled sequel Full English 2 followed the next following year. He's also found time to feature in the Documentary Stand up and the regular Podcast The Comedy Hangover. Reuben is fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival just last month.
Stella Graham - Stella is an import from the UK, with some parts from Sri Lanka. Her certificate indicates:
New Zealand new, since 2006.
Colour: Mediterranean Olive.
Low mileage, average runner.
ABS, not as toned as they used to be.
Hair conditioning.
E/W - what I normally say to wasabi.
PAS -Perfect Alcoholic Slurring.
Twin airbags.
Full service history. I never forget anyone who has serviced me. Unless they were sh#@.
Runs on 91 pinot noir.
Amazing grip.
No spare tyres.
Worth a look.
Stella was nominated 2009 NZ Comedy Guild Best Newcomer and was one of the team in the 2010 NZ International Comedy Festival show, Four Heads.
Rob Callaghan - As seen on TV2's Pulp Comedy 1998 -2001, Rob has been a regular at the Classic since the doors opened. His variety of festival shows have included Rob Callaghan - In a Taxi, a show in an actual London black cab.
His 2010 festival show was Confirmed - Mad, and explained why he went back to the UK for a while.
