It’s time to don your running shoes and get in shape for the 2011/2012 summer. Devonport’s 2 year-old fun run has started its third season and both complete running novices and experienced runners are invited to join in. Every entrant receives a number and finishing time.

This year we will be from new Devonport Navy Museum grounds at Torpedo Bay, at the end of King Edward Parade in Devonport.

The weekly run has both 3km and 5km circuits, with up to 85 people attending the weekly events last year. It has proved a popular family event, with runners as young as five completing the 3km circuit. “We even had a family of six compete in a number of the events, and one father found himself struggling to keep up with his six-year-old over the 5km circuit,” says co-organiser Fiona Ferguson.

This year’s route will start at the Torpedo Bay Cafe in the Navy Museum grounds at Torpedo Bay, and will take in the entire length of both King Edward and Queen Victoria parades as well as Cheltenham Beach.

“The new course takes in Devonport’s best scenery including the waterfront, Torpedo Bay, North Head and Cheltenham,” says Ferguson. “We’ve got an almost entire waterfront run, which makes the run incredibly safe for families with small children. There are no roads to cross in the 3k run, and only one in the 5k run".

“The new location will also make it easier to take a dip in the sea at Torpedo Bay after the run".

South Pacific Timber will again be lead sponsor for the event helping with advertising costs and prizes. South Pacific Timber’s owner, local resident, Chris Vincent was also a regular participant in last year’s run and says he is "delighted to be supporting such a worth while event".

Local wine merchant's Glengarry Wines will also donate spot prizes for adults during the year.

The Sun Run is a great way to get off the couch and out of the door. Last year the run attracted a number of first-time runners who enjoyed the camaraderie and the social get-togethers afterwards

Several participants met training buddies through the run and went on to prepare over the winter for longer events such as the Auckland and Taupo Half Marathons.

Prices include a soft drink.
