The show is a warm and very funny story about the lives of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy church hall. Every Thursday the not-overly-talented troupe - including snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine, hugely enthusiastic if not very able Lynne - all come together to dance with nobody watching - a situation they hope will persist. However, when they are invited to perform at a grand charity gala their disbelief becomes replaced by sheer terror. Will they be able to work together to produce a performance of a lifetime?
Stepping Out enjoyed a hugely successful West End run and won Evening Standard Best Comedy Award for 1984. It was also turned into a movie starring Liza Minelli and Julie Walters in 1991.
