Pinching The Mint Youth Theatre Company presents as part of the Hamilton Fringe Festival 2011...

Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind; in a translation by Edward Bond.

Written in 1891 and mostly banned or heavily censored until the 1970s, Wedekind's writing is darkly comedic yet deeply affecting, dealing with taboo subject matter still relevant to us today. The source for a recent Broadaway musical, Spring Awakening speaks to the teenager in all of us, dealing with the pressures of parents, teachers, society and friends alike. Sexy, dark, and even shocking in places, when seen in a modern context this play makes us question just how much 'progress' we've made since it was written over 100 years ago.

In their first production, Pinching The Mint Youth Theatre is striving to showcase the wealth of young theatrical talent the Waikato has to offer. The company currently has members from 17 to 23 years old, and a range of experience levels and backgrounds. Interested in exploring challenging issues and encouraging their peers to do the same, Pinching The Mint is new theatre by a new generation of theatre makers.
