Te Kōkī, the New Zealand School of Music present the fourth of five Friday at 5 concerts for 2011.
The Rugby World Cup opens with celebrations this evening in Auckland, broadcast around the country and the world. NZSM provides an ideal Wellington 'kick off' to this event with a free concert featuring the Award-winning NZSM Big Band under the direction of NZ jazz legend Rodger Fox.
Rodger Fox is New Zealand’s foremost jazz trombonist, big band leader, jazz educator, arranger and producer with a career stretching over decades. He is a senior jazz artist teacher at NZSM and director of the three NZSM Big Bands. In 2009 the NZSM Big Band together with international jazz recording artists trumpeter Clay Jenkins, saxophonist Bob Sheppard and pianist Bill Cunliffe recorded the CD Run for Cover which went on to win the prestigious 2010 Tui for Best Jazz Album of the Year.
The Friday at 5 series are concerts in which the NZSM comes 'downtown' sharing with Wellington audiences music which reaches out and connects us to our past, future, other cultures and to each other. The concerts all feature the extraordinary talent of NZSM staff, students and friends.
The remaining Friday at 5 concert for 2011 is on October 7.
