Schubert’s Three Piano Pieces D946, written in the last year of his life, remained unpublished for 40 years. The G Major Sonata of 1826 has been described by Imogen Cooper as “one of the rare completely serene sonatas that he wrote’. The profound B-flat Sonata is the final of the three sonatas composed just two months before his death and portrays a poignant landscape unique to Schubert. Like most of his piano works these were neglected throughout the 19th century but have come to be acknowledged as some of his finest masterpieces.
