The Suter holds New Zealand’s largest collection of watercolours by the popular nineteenth century landscape painter, John Gully (1819-1888). These paintings document Gully’s travels in New Zealand, from his early days as a settler solider in Taranaki, his intrepid trips through the South Island as a surveyor to his later life as a professional artist.

While the scenes are wide ranging, there is a strong focus on the Nelson region. Gully may be regarded as having set an important standard of art and made an early contribution to Nelson’s reputation as a vibrant arts centre.

Site ReScene is an exhibition that celebrates this important Nelson artist and presents the entire collection for view. Regional artists have also been invited to respond to the Gully collection, selecting a painting, detail, site or scene as their inspiration for a new work. These interpretations of Gully’s work, in their own styles, also provide an introduction to contemporary art in Nelson.

Artists’ floortalk: Saturday 24 September 2 pm
