Tākitimu Festival is an international arts and cultural festival in Hawke’s Bay, celebrating the people of the Tākitimu waka (Aotearoa/New Zealand, Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Rarotonga and Fiji).
Hosted by the Taumata of Ngati Kahungunu and likened to a Māori WOMAD, everyone is invited to join in the song, dance and oratory as thousands of descendants from the Tākitimu canoe converge on Hawke's Bay for an unforgettable four days of celebration.
The Tākitimu was one of seven canoes — Aotea, Kurahaupō, Mataatua, Tainui, Tokomaru, Te Arawa and Tākitimu — that in 1350 brought Māori to New Zealand from Hawaiki. The Tākitimu was captained by Tamatea Arikinui, some of whose descendants gave rise to Ngāti Kahungunu. The Ngati Kahungunu tribe covers the Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa regions.
