Homer's "Iliad" comes alive in this new opera composed by David Griffiths with libretto by John Davies. Soloists, chorus and orchestra from the University of Waikato's Conservatorium of Music, under the baton of maestro James Tennant and directorship of Michael Potts, come together to create a riveting evening of tragedy and pathos. Based on an extract from the epic poem, the plot focuses on the siege of Troy including the combat between Achilles and Hector and the ensuing tragedy. The music is arresting and lyrical with orchestral colour added by the inclusion of the University brass quintet. Arias abound and the chorus, in fashion with Greek tragedies, expounds on the proceedings.
The production is a new foray for Griffiths who ably combines the disciplines of ancient Greek theatre and musical modernity into a thrilling presentation. With sensational costumes and lighting design this will be an outstanding evening’s entertainment - one of those ‘not to be missed’ experiences.
