Southern Sinfonia and The British High Commission present Last Night of the Proms.
An evening of rugby-inspired musical mayhem!
Not the Royal Albert Hall but the Dunedin Town Hall, acknowledged to have some of the finest acoustics in the southern hemisphere.
This will be a musical celebration of the nationalities of the teams playing in the Rugby World Cup in Dunedin: Georgia, Argentina, Romania, Ireland, Italy, and of course England. Featured artists will be two of Dunedin’s internationally-celebrated musicians. "Bass baritone Jud Arthur initially trained as a rugby player, and went as far as representing Otago.' However, a knee injury led instead to a singing career, and he now appears with Australia and New Zealand’s leading orchestral and operatic organisations. Conductor Tecwyn Evans studied at the Universities of Otago and then Kansas, worked first with Glyndebourne Opera, and is now based in Graz, Austria.
An explosive evening is guaranteed with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture on the programme. On stage will be the Southern Sinfonia, Dunedin’s own acclaimed orchestra, joined by the City of Dunedin Choir with over 100 singers, as well as Dunedin’s award-winning St Kilda Brass. Well-known Radio NZ Concert broadcaster Kate Mead will be MC, enthusing choir and audience alike to give of their all in the singing of the Proms traditional items such as Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia, with a balloon, flag and painted face!
