Experience revolution with the NZSO.

New Zealand’s proud tradition of producing great voices continues into the next generation, and four of our modern greats are assembled here to perform the magnificent Ode to Joy. Beethoven’s intensely emotional expression of hope for mankind is the apotheosis of Romantic optimism, a work which your soul needs to hear to gain replenishment and exhilaration. It is paired with a specially-commissioned new work by Gareth Farr, revered among today’s composers for his ability to conjure spectacular and magical sound-worlds. An evening of uplifting music you won’t want to miss.

“...on a sudden, like the fleeting pleasures of life, or the spirited young adventurer, who would fly from ease and comfort at home to the inhospitable shores of New Zealand, we are snatched away from such eloquent music, to crude, wild and extraneous harmonies” -The Quarterly Musical Magazine & Review - 1825, 1st British performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony.

With the support of the New Zealand Government through Manatu Taonga - Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Pietari Inkinen - conductor
Sarah Castle - mezzo-soprano
Simon O’Neill - tenor
Jonathan Lemalu - bass
Voices NZ Chamber Choir
Christchurch City Choir

Farr - Kaitiaki
Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 Choral Symphony
