A Midsummer Night's Dream

There is nothing like a drop of magic in the midst of winter to lift one's spirit and the director of Midsummer Night’s Dream Raewyn Nevin has been very busy weaving her spell on the cast of Phoenix Theatre's latest production.

William Shakespeare crafted a rather complex farce set in Greece portraying the event of the marriage of the Duke of Athens Theseus and the Queen of the Amazons Hippolyta.

The plot involves 4 young Athenian lovers: Hermia & Lysander, and Helena & Demetrius. Their romantic intrigues are confused and further complicated by entering the forest where Oberon the king of the fairies and his Queen Titania preside over the some wonderful mischievous fairies.

A group of amateur actors are in the forest rehearsing their dire but hilarious rendering of the play Pyramus and Thisbe and they also come under the fairies’ spell. Puck or Robin Good fellow is a major character who is full of mischief and tricks. Others visiting the enchanted forest include Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug, Snout, Quince and Flute.

The themes that are illustrated in this very popular Shakespearian play are that love triumphs in the end and the pleasure of dreaming the impossible dream.

How often have we heard that famous quote and never knew the source, “The course of true love never did run smooth.”

The amazing talent of local young troupers playing these characters will delight you with their enthusiasm and love of Shakespeare.

The fresh approach to the imaginative costuming by Michelle Bos brings a new perspective with the illumination of the special effects stage lighting to add that dramatic touch of colour and atmosphere.

This is a new venture for Phoenix Theatre and they are delighted to meet a new group of keen young actors ready to show off their skills.
