A series of one-hour lectures presented by members of the New Zealand Military Historical Society around New Zealand and Auckland’s military history. Topics will span aspects of The Western Front WWI, Coastal Defences of Auckland, NZSAS, Auckland Naval history, New Zealand Military Vehicles and the New Zealand Wars. Both days will also feature a one-hour walk-and-talk surrounding the display of historical military vehicles at the northern entrance of the museum.

There will also be displays covering aspects of NZ’s military history as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2011. Displays in the auditorium foyer on level 2 include military re-enactors, model ships of the RNZN, medals, flags, NZ in the Boer War, war graves, militaria, the Auckland Regiment and presentations on NZ in WW1 and Vietnam. As well as indoor displays there will be over 20 military vehicles on show at the Northern Forecourt of the Museum on both days with jeeps, trucks, an amoured personnel carrier and a Bren gun carrier taking part.

This is the first Military Weekend held as part of the Heritage Festival and brings together several military historical and preservation societies at the Auckland War Memorial Museum venue, it promises to become an on-going highlight of the Heritage Festival calendar in the future.

The NZMHS is a charitable non-profit society based in Auckland established more than 40 years ago to research, promote and preserve New Zealand’s military heritage.
