In Britain, New Zealand and other commonwealth countries, 3 September is Merchant Navy Day. The date commemorates the sinking of the first British merchant ship in 1939, just hours after the war was declared. Merchant seafarers were involved in the Second World War from the first day to the last. 2010 was the first year that New Zealand celebrated Merchant Navy day, as well as the first year that Voyager Maritime Museum hosted the Remembrance Service.
Voyager Maritime Museum is again commemorating Merchant Navy Day with a Remembrance Service, laying of the wreath at the special memorial Merchant Navy Plaque, followed by a a special guided tour of the museum at 11am, focusing on Merchant Navy related objects and stories.
Please join us to commemorate those in the Merchant Navy who help defend our nation.
Held in the Edmiston Gallery of Maritime Art, Voyager Maritime Museum.
