"Mozart and Material Culture"
"This lecture explores the idea that, contrary to traditional biographical thinking, Mozart was engaged with the physical world around him, and that it is this engagement with material culture that in part situates him firmly in the Age of Enlightenment. In particular, I consider the idea of souvenirs and the extent to which the relationship between objects and language, and ideas and music, may offer new ways of thinking about Mozart’s works. The first movement of the string quartet K590 will be examined in this context." – Professor Cliff Eisen
Biography:
Professor Cliff Eisen is an award-winning musicologist and expert on the life and times of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A graduate of the University of Toronto and Cornell University, he joined the staff of King’s College, London, as Professor of Music in 1997.
