A collision of street and theatre.
This Christmas, Auckland’s big little city is set to become a theatrical playground, as Random Acts returns for a third quirky and interactive year.
As part of the month-long Christmas festivities in the CBD, workers, residents and shoppers will get the chance to walk with giants, watch an aerial theatre show, discover an underground world, help build a big red jigsaw, watch as a blank wall is transformed by tape or even wax lyrical themselves on chalkboards set up in Aotea Square.
Programme Director Sally Barnett says the Random Acts programme is designed to create a festive atmosphere in the city, with a distinctly Auckland feel.
“We’re working with top local artists on brand new works such as Soundig, an audio exploration of an aqueduct under Auckland city and dance works Pacific Me Barbie and The Business.”
“We’ve also booked two shows by street theatre superstars the Snuff Puppets from Melbourne, so you can expect to see three-metre seagulls and a giant puppet family roving around Aotea Square and nearby shared spaces.”
“An exciting addition to the programme is Beam - a searchlight installation that will run in Aotea Square from 9pm each night during Random Acts and then continue on until Christmas Eve. It’s just another part of dressing up the city at this festive time of the year.”
Heart of the City’s Kate Cleaver says “we’re really excited about Random Acts this year, it’s one of those things you just have to experience.”
“Random Acts runs alongside Heart of the City’s community entertainment programme Christmas in the Square. The street theatre, markets, decorations and music performances will make Auckland’s CBD the place to be this December.”
Audiences can join in the Random Acts fun with #chalkthoughts with the opportunity to write their thoughts on blackboards on Aotea Square or join in via twitter by using the hashtag #chalkthoughts throughout Random Acts week.
