For its December concerts Opus will present an attractive programme which celebrates the Christmas season in fitting fashion.
Conductor Peter Walls has chosen works which range from the elegance of the Baroque period to uplifting modern ones.
Corelli’s ‘Christmas’ Concerto is a work of outstanding Baroque beauty, and will make a splendid ‘overture’ for the programme.
Two distinguished soloists, the noted pianist Katherine Austin and Opus’s Principal Trumpet Bill Stoneham, will appear in Shostakovich’s exhilarating Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings.
Respighi’s ‘Trittico Botticelliano’, a musical depiction of ‘the Journey of the Magi’, is a colourful modern work but is written in a graceful Early Music style.
Mozart’s Symphony No.41 is popularly called ‘The Jupiter’ because of its Olympian character. It is renowned for its excitement and mixture of striking musical themes, and will make a fine ending to an outstanding year for Opus.
