A jam-packed, funk-fuelled dance party that’s become legendary in the Arts Festival calendar after four consecutive sell-out shows.
Hosted by Sunday Star Times music writer Grant Smithies, The Sitting Room is always ‘standing room only’. When Nelson’s favourite DJ was unavailable to play at last year’s festival, there was loud moaning, but now he’s back by popular demand, his record crates bulging with fresh dance tracks from around the world.
Unlike many DJs who play one genre all night long, Smithies veers all over the musical map, guided only by his woefully short attention span and wonderfully eccentric taste. Expect a diverse mix of soul, funk, dub and disco, rare African hi-life 45s, Jamaican dancehall, New York house classics, Brazilian bossa nova, crackly old New Wave tracks you’d forgotten you loved, and God knows what else.
Most importantly, get your ticket early to avoid disappointment. Venue set up for dancing, seating not guaranteed.
