C’mon Black! tells the story of Dickie Hart, a middle-aged bloke from the Kiwi heartland and passionate rugby supporter. It’s 1995 and Dickie is leaving the farm for the first time on the trip of a lifetime, to the Rugby World Cup in South Africa to watch the All Blacks take on the world. With Jonah Lomu, Zinny and Fitzy on the team, how can they possibly lose?
Leaving behind his beloved cows (and wife), Dickie’s trip is a voyage of discovery – along with the highs and lows of rugby, his horizons are swiftly broadened when he encounters the realities of poverty, racism and the big world beyond the paddock.
Not simply a play about rugby, C’mon Black! cements itself as a poignant snapshot of our history, identity and maturity as a nation. C’mon Black! harnesses the creative talents of playwright Roger Hall (Four Flat Whites in Italy), producer Armstrong Creative (Le Sud, Niu Sila), director Andrew Foster (Good Night, The End) and is performed by Gavin Rutherford (Le Sud).
‘The excitement and tension of the final moments of that game was created on stage by Rutherford as real and believable, making this a most entertaining piece of theatre.’
Ewen Coleman, The Dominion Post.
