Due to performer illness, the programme for this Friday Lunchtime Concert has changed. NZSM's Artists in Residence, The New Zealand String Quartet, will now perform two works.
Bartók: 'String Quartet No. 4'
Jack Body: Three Transcriptions
Bartók's five movement String Quartet No. 4 exhibits an "arch" structure — the first movement is thematically related to the last, and the second to the fourth with the third movement standing alone. Also, the outer four movements feature rhythmic sforzandos that cyclically tie them together in terms of climatic areas. Written in 1927, it has been suggested that Bartók was influenced in his writing by Alban Berg's Lyric Suite (1926) which he had heard that year.
Ever popular with audiences, Jack Body's work juxtaposes transcriptions of music played by a Chinese jaw’s harp, a Madagascan zither and the music of a Bulgarian village band. It was composed at the request of the Kronos Quartet who have played the work throughout the world.
The Friday Lunchtime concerts are free and open to the public.
