The New Zealand School of Music is very privileged to have two fine violins, (one attributed as ca 19th century Hungarian and the other as ca 18th century Italian). Clare Galambos-Winter, who was in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years, gifted the instruments to the School for use by promising students.
In this concert the 2011 recipients of these violins will perform with Clare Galambos-Winter as guest of honour.
Third year student Arna Shaw will perform 'Allemande' from 'Partita no. 1 in B minor' by J.S.Bach, 'Fratres' by Arvo Part and the 1st movement of 'Violin Concerto no. 1' by S. Prokofiev.
Postgraduate student Jonathan Tanner will play the first movement of the Sibelius Concerto and 'Polonaise Brillante in A' by Henryk Wieniawski.
Arna Shaw is taught at NZSM by Helene Pohl, 1st violinist with the New Zealand String Quartet, and Jonathan Tanner by Vesa-Matti Leppanen, concertmaster of the NZSO.
The Friday Lunchtime concerts are free and open to the public. Held in the Adam Concert Chamber, NZSM Kelburn Campus.
