Niki Hastings McFall plays with pattern similar to the ways traditional Polynesian artists. Like them, Hastings McFall addresses a universal language rather than the specific and applies a language encoded with cultural meaning. In this Va Series she continues her juxtaposition of the Pacific Island with the urban addressing issues of difference, ideology and cliché with cultural readings of similar icons and symbols.
Lonnie Hutchinson also juxtaposes the traditional with contemporary. She uses black, a feature in Maori art and highly stylised kowhaiwhai in repeated motif. Resembling wall and rafter patterns of a meeting house. Long black panels of builders’ paper stand upright and strong. There is at once a strength and an intricate delicate play of light and shadow in these works.
