Stagecraft presents: “Foreskin’s Lament”

Written by Greg McGee and directed by Kathi George.

‘A landmark play in the history of NZ theatre’

‘A quantum leap forward in NZ drama’

‘Regarded by many as the greatest NZ play ever’

In New Zealand a rugby player is an everyman, and the game and play present a model of society. There are elements of the play that discuss the brutal and sometimes very ugly side of the rugby culture in New Zealand – particularly in regard to sexism and homophobia.

The play is set in 1976 and looks forward to the 1981 Springbok Tour. Before the play starts, Ken has been kicked in the head at practice (deliberately, by the ambitious Clean) and, though clearly unwell, is urged by Tupper to play the grudge match against Ngapuk. (It has been suggested that the misnamed character “Clean” was based on Robert Muldoon.)

Foreskin’s Lament is on the Secondary Schools Syllabus, and bookings from several schools have already been received. In addition, we are fortunate that Greg McGee has agreed to help promote our production of his play,

Come and support the Stagecraft 2011 World Cup programme!
