Doctor Zhivago
USA/ Italy 1965
Running Length: 197 minutes
Cast: Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Alec Guiness
Director: David Lean
Screenplay: Robert Bolt from the novel by Boris Pasternak
Cinematography: Freddie Young & Nicolas Roeg
To follow up the dry desert expanses of Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean took to the snowy steppes of Russia to bring an unparalleled version of Pasternak’s novel to the screen.
The heart of the story is the love between Yuri and Lara, but the path of true love never runs smoothly, especially when Russia is in the throes of revolution. We follow the two halves of this relationship through marriages, war and a series of tragic events, all of which conspire to keep Lara and Yuri apart.
Julie Christie is luminous as Lara, and Omar Shariff skilfully portrays Dr. Zhivago as an efficient man of medicine with the soul of a poet. And who can forget the poignant melody of Lara’s Theme which tinkles its way through the film?
