Since European settlement, images of the landscape have been the most popular painting subject in New Zealand. At first, the land was recorded for topographical purposes. In the late 19th century, as photography became more accessible artists began to push the boundaries in how they depicted the land. Landscape painting remains popular.

The selection of works in this exhibition have been given the title Land[e]scape for each represents a departure in some form from the traditional landscape.
