Website:
Cornel de Ronde, geologist and geochemist with GNS Science, was leader of the January 2011 project that plumbed the depths of Lake Rotomahana. Using a torpedo-shaped AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle), GNS Science aimed to make a detailed map of the lake bed. What they found confounded belief that the fabled Pink Terrace of Rotomahana was destroyed during the Tarawera eruption of 1886. Sixty metres down in the murky depths, sonar and imaging technology relayed images of the base of the silica formation.
Free with admission to the museum.
