Line Colour Form is an exhibition of abstract works from the stable of artists at the Pierre Peeters Gallery.
A key work of this show is Homage to Paul Klee by Harry Wong, whose work from the 1960s is in many prominent New Zealand collections. Historically his work has predominantly used symbols as metaphors for various themes such as popular culture and the human condition. His new works are striking geometric pieces, intense blocks of flat colour painted on to the reverse of Perspex. Some are compositions taken directly from photographs of sketches done in the late '50s / early '60s, a time when abstraction reflected a time of personal struggle in his life.
The work of Shannon Novak has a similar bold, geometric aesthetic, and the use of colour in his work is extremely important. The colours represent tones of sound, major and minor chords that effect an emotional reaction in the observer. Each work is accompanied by a sound track composed by the artist to further explore that relationship between these tones or colours, so these pieces are listened to as well as observed.
Carl Foster’s work traditionally has a strong connection with blended form in abstracted images of people and landscapes. Like Wong, the abstraction of his subject matter are representative of the human subconscious; they are an exploration into and depiction of his own mind.
