Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts showcases the paintings of Brent Redding - a Napier-based artist with ties to the Manawatu in Paintings and Such! The exhibition features an array of work in several styles from landscapes and still life to more surreal works. Opening with a reception to honour the artist on Friday, 13th May from 5 – 7 PM, the exhibition will run through 14th June at the gallery.
Paintings and Such! displays 20 paintings - many never exhibited publicly before - by this talented artist whose work has not often been exhibited to this extent in New Zealand. Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is honoured to be able to show these works to the public and to promote it to potential collectors of world-class art.
The artist writes: “I have always painted in more than one style, reflecting a broad set of reasons for picking up the brush. These vary from a desire to capture the colour and light of the world around me, to interests in pattern and design, sequences, capturing movement, and occasionally making social comment. This variety of objectives, combined with variation of medium and technique, has created quite an eclectic body of work. I also teach painting, and years of analysing and solving painting problems of students seems to have extended my own interests and capabilities, further encouraging this eclecticism.”
Redding graduated with a BSc from Massey University in 1975, but never undertook a science career; after a number of jobs he became a full-time painter in 1993. His infrequent solo exhibitions have so far been in Hawkes Bay and in Brisbane, Sydney and on the Gold Coast. Although his work is often included in group shows, this solo exhibition will be only his third major exhibition in his home country.
In addition to his paintings in oil, acrylic and pastel, Brent also works as a muralist, painting tutor and graphic designer. At the 2004 Annual Hawkes Bay Charity Auction, his painting ‘Red, White and Blues’ was sold for a then record price of $26,000 in aid of Cranford Hospice. His works are motivated by a search for pattern and design and reflect the influences of music, poetry, dance, the human condition and a keen sense of the absurd. Redding constantly experiments within his work which might depict aspects of art nouveau, pop-art, surrealism and other genres; his fluid style capturing elements of the world which interest the artist and require him to capture these scenes on canvas.
Brent Redding has had work published in Australian Artist (Aug, 1995), Art Craft International (Issue No. 36, 1996) and in International Artist (April/May, 1999). The artist has been a finalist in the Montana Lindauer touring exhibition (1987); he received a Special Merit at the Rotoart Hamilton Exhibition (1988); he was the winner of the 1994 Norsewear Art Awards and a Merit Award winner at the Norsewear Art Awards in 1996.
The public is invited to attend the exhibition opening on Friday 13th May from 5 – 7 PM to meet the artist and view the collection of work showcasing the talent of Brent Redding.
