Händel's great oratorio, Messiah, is currently being rehearsed by two local choirs, who will combine their forces of about 100 singers in May for two performances. Kowhai Singers in Warkworth, directed by Peter Cammell, and Hibiscus Coast Singers, directed by Norman Firth, are preparing the magnificent score that Händel is said to have written in a twenty four day spurt in 1741. It is many years since this justly famous work has been performed in Rodney but it has remained a choral favourite since its first performance in Dublin in 1742.
The group will be accompanied by the well known Auckland organist and choir trainer, Indra Hughes, who will play from a score created by Dr John Wells, the Auckland City organist, who has transferred the complexities of the original orchestral score to a more manageable version for one player at the organ. The result is still stunning.
Soloists for these performances will be Susan Hayday and Beverley Hicks, already well known as soloists within the district, and Peter Stewart and Iain Tetley of Auckland. The first performance will be on 1 May at Mahurangi College, and will be conducted by Peter Cammell, while the second will be a week later at Orewa College on May 8, when the performance will be conducted by Norman Firth.
Tickets available from Warkworth i-SITE, Orewa Menswear, choir members and at the door.
