The Dowse celebrates its 40th birthday with a show spanning four decades of collecting and exhibiting. Treasures from the collection will be presented alongside profiles of collection, exhibition and audience development highlights under each director: 1971–1976, David Millar; 1976–1981, Jim Barr; 1981–1988, James Mack; 1988–1998, Bob Maysmor; 1998–2008, Tim Walker; and current director, Cam McCracken.

The Dowse Art Gallery was officially opened by Sir Arthur Porrit, Governor General, on 31st May 1971, named for the late Mayor and Mayoress of Lower Hutt, Percy and Mary Dowse. It was really Mary's vision that saw the creation of an art gallery for the city. Sadly she was killed in a car accident prior to opening and never saw her dream realised.

Designed by Ronald Muston of the Structon Group Architects, funding for the gallery came from rate payers plus donations from the Hutt Art Society and the Percy and Mary Dowse Trust Foundation. The collection was kick started with a gift of 70 paintings from the Hutt Art Society.
