This winter sees the return of former Uxbridge Creative Centre student Rod Olliff to the Malcolm Smith Gallery with his new exhibition Primal Line.

A self-taught artist, Olliff credits Uxbridge with helping him discover what he was meant to do, exhibiting for the first time in the Malcolm Smith Gallery in 2009. This new collection of works explores the ‘line’, which is widely considered the first form of communication. It has also provided inspiration to artists throughout history, particularly the non-objective movement within which artists experimented with line and shape to create balanced and harmonious compositions. It is this investigation which has possessed Rod Olliff:

“To realise a harmony through balance, line, colour and even tension – a connection can be made through the eyes to the soul.”

Using paint to describe his way of thinking, Olliff mulls extensively over each composition and execution of his acrylic paintings to ensure a certain “truth” is imbued. This heavy deliberation is in the hopes of engaging the viewer and connecting with them on a cerebral level. In order to achieve this, Ollliff incorporates universal symbols within a monochrome palette, in the same vein as modernist artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky.

The exhibition will open on Thursday May 26th and will run until June 15th. Numerous fun and engaging public programmes for the whole family will be offered during the exhibition period, including an artist discussion on Saturday 28th May, and a screening of the film Kandinsky and the Russian House on Thursday June 9th. Public programme and workshop information can be found at www.uxbridge.org.nz.
