Living Life My Way: Disability Information Expo

The Living Life My Way: Disability Information Expo is a unique platform for the disability sector looking to maximise access to and provide information for people with disabilities. In 2009 & 2010, the Living Life My Way Expo Christchurch had around 30 of Christchurch’s most vital disability service organisations on board and directly targeted people with disabilities, their families, carers and supporters as well as disability service providers, health professionals and other community services. The event in 2011 will be held in Dunedin and with approximately 30 exhibitors and over 300 expected attendees; the expo will be bigger and better.

After some valuable research, IDEA (Intellectual Disability Empowerment in Action, a service branch of the IHC) has discovered that many people with disabilities are not aware of the multitude of services available to them. At this expo, a range of agencies providing services and products for consumers with disabilities and special consuming needs (including healthcare, mobility aids, independent living advice and other special needs services) will set-up information stalls and displays at the venue. Attendees are then able to view, discuss and get information from the providers directly. A major draw card of the expo is that it will showcase relevant services in one location, which allows professionals, families and individuals the opportunity to make informed choices in living the life they want all in the one place.

Mission statement: To offer disability-related information for the benefit of people with disabilities, their families and caregivers, as well as for professionals within this sector. The purpose of this expo is to enhance the quality of life regardless of the nature of the disability, empower individuals with disabilities to achieve self-sufficiency and independent living and promote to live life their way and enjoy full participation in society.

Living Life My Way will enable people with disabilities and their families to make choices for people with special needs! It will be held in the Hutton Theatre at the Otago Museum.
