I have been using the cross as a compositional element in my canvas work for some time. It has no real religious context, except to draw focus on how precious and divine our native creatures are. The gold leaf is also an element in my work that draws the viewer in and creates a specialness about a piece. It’s a very balanced and powerful shape.

In this exhibition, my inspiration has come from the Mexican tin craft art. I have travelled to Mexico a number of times now, and especially love the crafts from Central Mexico which focus on the sacred or flaming heart with wings, and the tin niches with religious and other images within them. This is my New Zealand take on these ideas using mixed media on cut out board.

Enjoy,
Rae
