The Journey was commissioned from Leonie Holmes for the Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s first performance in the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, Manukau, in 2005. The inspiration comes from the two texts used – a traditional Maori blessing, and a text by Tessa Stephens focusing on the themes of connection, remembrance and togetherness. We feature 200 singers on stage as The Music Association of Auckland choir, who sang at the first performance, join us. A special journey not to be missed.
Commissioned by the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Robin Toan’s Sinfonia Concertante will have its world premiere. Toan is one of New Zealand’s leading young composers, with her works gaining international attention and awards.
A perennially favourite choral work is Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem written at the high point of French romanticism in the 1880s. This beautiful setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead uses sumptuous colours and beguiling orchestration to transfix the listener. At the centre is its most famous movement, the sublime soprano aria “Pie Jesu”.
