If it’s high-energy, action-packed fun you’re looking for, the 2011 ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships in Wellington could be just the ticket. Featuring the world’s best competitors, this is a great opportunity to combine all the drama of this amazing martial art, with a city that loves to play!
Let’s kick things off with some Taekwon-Do
For a small country, New Zealand has a giant reputation for hosting world class sporting events. The huge success of the recent World Rowing Championships is a perfect example.
In 2011, Taekwon-Do will showcase its sport by holding the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships in Wellington from 9th to 13th March.
By definition, ‘Taekwon’ means "to jump or kick with the foot".... "punch with the hand or fist" ... and ‘Do’ means "art or way". But this highly skilled sport is no random combination of painful blows. Rather it’s a spectacular martial art requiring discipline, athleticism and self-control and it’s the most popular martial art in the world.
Such is the drama of Taekwon-Do, it’s easy to imagine on a movie set:
•Power Breaking - smashing as many boards as possible with one hit
•Special Techniques - breaking boards with a series of different flying kicks
•Free Sparring - winning points using punches and kicks against your opponent.
•Patterns - performing pre-determined moves against imaginary opponents
Aside from the obvious display of strength, Taekwon-Do also tests rhythm, balance, synchronicity and team work.
The venue for the event is the TSB Bank Arena, a purpose built sports stadium right in the middle of Wellington, an easy walking distance to hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
