The New Zealand School of Music Orchestra perform their first public concert for 2011.
Dr Martin Riseley conducts the orchestra in one of the popular St-Andrews-on-the-Terrace Lunchtime Concert series. The programme consists of Rossini's ebullient overture to L'italiana in Algeri by Rossini and the melodious Symphony No. 3 by Schubert.
"These two works, written within three years of each other, couldn't be more different," says Riseley. "As with all the overtures to his comic operas, the Rossini is a bubbling and zestful introduction to the characters and setting of that tale. The Schubert on the other hand, while no less joyful, is an altogether more elegant work. While Classical in its form and proportions, it also contains Romantic elements of long, lyrical melodies, interesting harmonic development and uses the orchestral instrumental timbres in really interesting ways. Schubert wrote the work just after he turned 18, younger than most of the players in the orchestra!"
As always, patrons are encouraged to bring their (quiet) lunch to the concert. Entry is free, but koha is encouraged to assist in supporting the series. For more information, contact NZSM on (04) 463 5369 or email info@nzsm.ac.nz.
