Flight comprises Carolyn Mills (harp) & Bridget Douglas (flute).
For this lunchtime concert at the New Zealand School of Music Flight has chosen music from many cultures and global influences – from Eastern to African to American to home in NZ.
These works showcase not only the gorgeous traditional sounds of the flute and harp, but open up new sound worlds - with the aid of the bass and alto flutes and some creative musical devices and extended techniques. At one point the harp will have paper woven through its strings for a snare-like dampened effect. The bass flute will whisper and click and flutter. The harp strings will be struck with the tuning key for an almost pitchless percussive sound.
Toru Takemitsu wrote, “I’ve been gradually captured by the infinite variety of the expression that sea has, and its ability to bound different areas on the earth. I wish that I had an elegant and healthy body like a whale and that I could swim in the sea that has no west and east.”
The programme includes:
- Eve de Castro-Robinson Pearls of the Sea,
- Jack Body Three Movements from Rainforest: I Hunting Song, II Returning from a Hunt, III Lullaby,
- Toru Takemitsu Toward the Sea III for Alto Flute and Harp,
- Vincent Persichetti Serenade No 10
