Carl Nixon Play Readings

Artworks Community Theatre is putting on readings from two plays written by Christchurch-based author Carl Nixon.

Crumpy: the Life and Times of Barry Crump" explores both the loveable larrikin and story-teller, as well as the darker side of Barry's upbringing and relationships. There are several good yarns and some great comic acting, as well as some really dramatic moments. Barry will be played by Greg Dean, ably supported by Rosalie Henaghan and Grant Lilley who, between them, play fourteen characters that Barry encounters in various situations. Crumpy is directed by Colin Beardon.

Two Fish 'n' a Scoop", which the NZ Herald voted the best new NZ play of 2010, is set in a fish & chip shop run by a Chinese immigrant. The action centres around a potential romance between the owner's daughter and a young New Zealander who gets a job working behind the counter. The play also explores the experiences of Asian residents of New Zealand from multiple perspectives. Forrest Denise and Tim Balme (both high school students) play the two young leads, supported by Alistair Babbage and Linda Savage as the shop-owning parents, with Sean Carley and Hayley Hailstone playing supporting roles. Two Fish 'n' a Scoop is directed by Lucinda Peterken.

A 'play reading' means that actors do not have to learn all their lines (they carry the script with them on stage) and there is no complicated lighting, set, costume or make-up. There will be plenty of drama though, and plenty of action.

These performances support NZ Book Month, which this year features Carl Nixon's latest novel, Settler's Creek.
