Dave Swensen is a video artist from the U.S. His work consists of conceptually based sculpture and video pieces that reflect his personal relationships as well as observations of human conditions and everyday normalities.
“Things That Pass” encompasses a range of content and emotion. All of the work is focused on the connections between day to day human interactions and everyday common events that are strongly rooted back to his personal life.
Swensen began as a mixed media artist arranging common materials like wood, plaster and aluminium in an unorthodox manner to explore human mortality and the fragility of life and its cycles. He found new ways to understand consumer needs and life’s day to day similarities by expanding his materials to human hair, glitter, medication, soap, plastics, Styrofoam and synthetic plants. For Swensen, his sculptural work, as objects, lacked a visible interaction with human emotion. So he began making films, integrating time as a physical quality in his work. By manipulating image, time, and video sequence Swensen could delve into human emotion or the absence thereof in relation to his sculptural objects. He shares an interest in combining both mediums in to create installations that explore many textures and ideas.
