Antipodes String Trio

Talented young New Zealanders return for seven centre chamber music New Zealand tour. Two of New Zealand’s leading young string players will visit Putaruru in March as part of a Chamber Music New Zealand tour.

Christabel Lin (violin) and Nicholas Hancox (viola) join one of the United States’ most outstanding young cellists David Requiro to tour as Antipodes String Trio. The ensemble was formed through connections between the New Zealand School of Music, Vienna Conservatory of Music and the University of Michigan. The tour takes place in seven North Island centres, including a performance in Putaruru.

“While Christabel and I have spent some years overseas now, it has always been our intention to make careers in New Zealand, and contribute back to the musical life that nurtured our early aspirations as musicians,” Nicholas says. “We are very privileged to be able to collaborate with David (a long-time admirer of our land), and thus create and hopefully foster relationships in New Zealand with musicians abroad.”

The programme includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, and New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn. “For us, the string trio is an under performed genre”, says Nicholas, “despite it having contributions from all the old masters as well as many 'gems' from the 20th century.”

Christabel Lin has performed as violin soloist with numerous orchestras, including the NZSO, APO, CSO, and Taichung Symphony in Taiwan. She has been awarded prizes at the National Concerto Competition in Christchurch and University of Auckland Concerto and Chamber Music Competitions. She is currently studying at the Vienna Conservatory of Music.

Violist Nicholas Hancox completed his Master of Music at the University of Michigan in 2009, following Bachelor of Music (Hons) studies at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2008 he was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Centre working with esteemed musicians such as James Levine, Bernard Haitink, The Julliard String Quartet, and Pamela and Claude Franck. Nicholas currently studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theatre, München, Germany.

As winner of the 2008 Naumburg award, David Requiro now belongs to a distinguished catalogue of elite musicians that include Steven Hough, Joseph Silverstein, the Emerson String Quartet and former NZSO concertmaster Wilma Smith (as a member of the Lydian String Quartet). David has appeared as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and has appeared in recital at Carnegie's Weill Hall in New York and the Phillips Collection in Washington DC. He is currently “Artist in Residence” at the University of Puget Sound, Tacomo, Washington.
