Visit the Creative Quarter this Thursday as Parnell galleries open to late serving up a tempting smorgasbord of fine art - the perfect entrée to a memorable evening at one of Parnell’s great restaurants.
This sociable event centres on the cluster of galleries located in the middle of Parnell Road; this month including: ARTIS Gallery, Jonathan Grant Galleries, Pankhurst Studio Gallery, Pierre Peeters Gallery and Sanderson Contemporary Art.
On the menu this month…
- John Blackburn: In the Shadow of The Moon
ARTIS Gallery, 280 Parnell Road
John Blackburn is a British-based artist who has been exhibiting in Auckland and abroad since the 1950s. His works explore the use of simple, strong forms with limited, pure colours and other mixed media to create lyrical and meaningful compositions.
John Blackburn has traveled from his home in England to be present for this exhibition and will give a talk on his work at 6pm, Thursday 10 March, at ARTIS Gallery.
- Shannon Novak Exhibition
Pierre Peeters Gallery, Habitat Courtyard, 251 Parnell Road
When a musician moves from one note to another in a twelve note scale, they move or shift one semitone upward or downward. When playing a major triad or major chord made of three notes, shifting the middle note in the triad downward one semitone changes the major triad into a minor triad. It is a subtle change that has a profound effect on the emotional experience for the listener; the major triad evokes more positive emotions whilst the minor triad elicits largely negative emotions. It is this tension between a positive and negative emotional experience created by slight of hand that is explored in “Semitone shift.”
Last year one of Novak's works was included in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Collection - a collection that includes the works of well known emerging and established New Zealand artists.
Shannon Novak also features at White Night Parnell, Saturday 12th March. See details below.
- Caryline Boreham, Kevin Capon, Paul Hartigan and Jane Zusters - Found: Documenting Person, Place and Object In Contemporary Photography
Sanderson Contemporary Art, 251 Parnell Road
Contemporary photography has found itself increasingly concerned with the meaning of reality and representation, and photography's position within an art historical context that has seen a shift away from inert image-recording towards conscious, stylised image-making.
Parnell galleries are open late on the second Thursday of each month. Be sure to visit our website (www.parnell.net.nz/Parnell_Late_Night_Art.htm) for further gallery details; or better still, take a stroll down Parnell Road this Thursday.
- White Night In Parnell
