Born in Christchurch in 1980 of Ngāpuhi descent, Lewin has been a resident of Auckland for most of her life. Drawing on both her Maori and Pakeha backgrounds, Aroha Lewin creates works which reference the fusion of the two, in a society where multiple cultures are now inexorably linked and inter-mingled. She reconfigures Maori design with a highly stylised aesthetic and using modern printmaking processes and materials.
For this exhibition, Lewin has created a series of limited edition prints which challenge our preconceptions of what constitutes Maori art. Her practise includes a re-appropriation of the ubiquitous and much-debated koru, and the use of bold colour and sardonic text to question notions of cultural correctness. For Lewin, cultural authenticity is less about remaining faithful to a lexicon of traditional symbols than it is about drawing from what is present and pertinent to society today.
