“Upstream Midstream Downstream” is a powerful exhibition of John Malcolm’s work, curated by Lisa Reihana as part of the Auckland Arts Festival 2011.
This is a compelling set of photographs taken as a result of his time covertly recording North Sea oilrigs. These give a sobering, unvarnished picture of the petroleum industry, which has in its control the world’s most valuable commodity, oil, while putting at risk its ultimate and greatest legacy, nature.
Equally poignant are images from his “Inside Offshore: Trans-Alaska Pipeline” series that follow the 800-mile pipeline from the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay to the port at Valdez, exposing the extreme lengths it takes to convey ‘black gold’ to the market. In these two bodies of work Malcolm brilliantly counterpoises the brutality of exploitation with the magnificence of nature and cleverness of human endeavour.
The exhibition is held in the Snowwhite Gallery, Unitec School of Design, Building 1, Entry 1, Carrington Road.
