Moncayo – Huapango
Rodrigo – Concierto de Aranjuez
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No.5 in E minor
Conducted by Uwe Grodd, Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s first concerts for 2011 begin with Moncayo’s exuberant ‘Huapango’ (fandango), an irresistibly joyful treatment of Mexican folk tunes.
Rodrigo’s ever-popular Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra, inspired by the gardens of the Royal Spanish Palace of Aranjuez, transports us to another place and time, capturing the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds and the gushing of fountains in the royal gardens of Aranjuez in Madrid. Manukau Symphony Orchestra welcomes virtuoso Italian guitarist, Alberto Mesirca, direct from Venice on his first visit to New Zealand as soloist in this enchanting concerto.
Tchaikovsky’s well-crafted, colourfully orchestrated Symphony No.5 is reminiscent of Beethoven’s 5th ‘Fate’ Symphony – it journeys from dramatic tragedy to a triumphant finale – ultimate victory through strife.
Supported by Genesis Energy.
Held in the Genesis Energy Theatre, TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.
