Fronted by "fluid, unique vocals" and backed by a tight, swanky collection of musicians, Christchurch band Duchess Swift has been described as "a fusion of various genres”.

"Duchess Swift - a refreshing, talented, young band crafting good, commercial pop/rock with a jazz leaning. Technically the band excels creatively and in ability. Having spent the first few months together playing a mix of originals and covers at local jazz/blues bar Fat Eddies, they are currently defining their original sound as jazz/pop/fusion, the band are aware of the evolving nature of creating music with musicians of varied backgrounds and tastes. Lead vocalist Kerry Coulshed describes the process as “a creative experiment, a project of evolving design!”

Since recently producing their debut EP and becoming semi finalists in the 2010 RDU/Dux de Lux Roundup Competition, the band have been seeking spaces to play and actively build a fan base. The Loons is the perfect venue for a Duchess Swift performance. The atmosphere is welcoming, the acoustics are ideal and it provides an easy context to connect with the audience through anecdotes and song.

Duchess Swift are: Kerry Coulshed (lead vocal), Alison Kingdon (keyboard), Craig Edwards (drums), Billy Mills (guitar, backing vocals), James Allen (bass, backing vocal). With an eclectic mix of music influences, the five piece bring a variety of knowledge from music genres including: jazz, blues, funk, reggae, soul, pop, alternative and classical. This ultimately lends itself to what could be described as a “creative vortex” evolving and sometimes unpredictable.
