Haydn Hob XV: 26 in f sharp minor
Chris Gendall (NZ): Intaglio (2006)
Kenji Bunch (USA): Swing Shift – Groove Boxes
Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in a minor, op. 50

NZTrio kicks off its 2011 touring season with a programme of musical passion and intensity. Beginning with Haydn’s piano trio in F sharp major – a striking work, full of subtlety and changing moods – the trio soon switches pace with a piece by Chris Gendall, one of NZ’s leading young composers (he has just finished a Doctorate at Cornell University, and in 2008 was the winner of the SOUNZ Contemporary Award). His “Intaglio” demands a high level of precise ensemble playing – but the effect is fantastic, and utterly riveting. American composer/viola player Kenji Bunch is fast becoming a ‘composer to watch’ (as described by the NY Times), and his music is immediately accessible and engaging. “Grooveboxes” is a movement from a larger work called “Swing Shift”, and its intense rhythmic groove is guaranteed to keep the toes tapping!

Rounding out the programme is one of the masterworks of the piano trio repertoire, the epic Trio in A minor by Tchaikovsky. Written ‘in the memory of a great artist’ (the pianist and conductor Nikolay Rubinstein), it is highly romantic and incredibly virtuosic, full of soaring themes and great emotional depth. This is a concert you won’t want to miss.
