The First City in History is the latest in an ongoing series of major photographic studies of East Asian urban environments. This project focuses on Hiroshima the first city in history to be subjected to nuclear warfare when it was bombed by the United States in World War II. Amundsen returns to this site, particularly the riverside area around Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in an attempt to reconsider the relationship between the politics of collective memory, public space and the photographic apparatus.
