A Repertory production of Shakespeare's Hamlet, directed by Robert Gilbert.
Change of dates due to earthquake - now 5, 6 & 7 May.
Opening night sold out.
In this compelling, fresh-minted production of Shakespeare's great play, Hamlet - Prince of Denmark, we meet a Hamlet of our time, played in contemporary dress on a towering fortress set, monitored by security guards and other trappings of modern surveillance. It is a palace mired in political and military tensions. Hamlet, scion of the most powerful family in the land, returns from his university abroad to mourn his father's untimely death - "so excellent a King". Instead, he is greeted with the excesses of a decadent dictatorial state - corruption, greed and the pervasive presence of evil.
With suspect speed, his uncle, now the king, has married his brother's wife, Hamlet's mother. "It is not, nor can come to good." Then, in a series of rare spectral visitations, Hamlet learns the truth and is urged to revenge.
The multi-layered complexity of Hamlet's personality and his inability to take action, have fascinated theatre-goers and scholars alive for centuries.
Merging the eloquence of Shakespeare's incomparable text with gripping visual action, this production directed for Repertory by Robert Gilbert, and designed by Julian Southgate, will undoubtedly be a hit - a palpable hit!
