Autumn Equinox

In the ancient world the solstices and equinoxes were the most important days of the year. They marked a time of change in the seasons and the lives of the people. All of the major religious festivals are associated with either a solstice or an equinox. In the ancient world, and to this day in many countries around the world, the day begins at sundown (not midnight). Therefore in the ancient tradition the autumn Equinox begins at sundown on Sunday March 20th 2011.

This year this is also Samhain. Samhain begins with the full moon after the Autumn Equinox. This "Harvest Moon" will rise over the heel stone in the east as the sun sets over the eastern heelstone.

The programme at Stonehenge will begin with a presentation and tales of the Autumn Equinox by Richard Hall, followed by the ancient sunset and moonrise ceremony of the "Fall" within circle of stones. After the ceremony there will be socialising and a harvest feast (pot luck - bring a plate).
